Fishmonger teaches vital skills
Posted: 11th October 2022Cooking skills needed to achieve a qualification have been demonstrated to students by a professional.
James Ackroyd from Potter Street Fishmongers, in Bishops Stortford, ran a fish filleting masterclass for Year 11 GCSE food preparation and nutrition students.
He told students how he got into the fish mongering business and answered questions on what it means to own your own business.
The visitor also spoke about the freshness of fish, sustainability and how to use a knife safely – knowledge and skills students will use in preparation for their GCSE practical exams.
Linda McCormack, food teacher and careers lead, said: “This is the third time James has visited Forest Hall and given the GCSE classes a masterclass in filleting fish.
“This is a very valuable lesson for students. The aim of the masterclass was to teach students the high-level skill of filleting a fish as this is part of the GCSE curriculum.
“It is very important to give students unique, real-life experiences which they would not get elsewhere.”
Students will complete a three-hour cooking exam next year where they have to demonstrate their skills, including filleting a fish.
